Phoenix

The phoenix is a mythological creature who lives for 500-1000 years. At the end of the life cycle, it has to build itself a nest and set itself on fire. But, it knows that it gets to rise from the ashes to live another life. I’ve tried to capture the lifecycle of the phoenix in this piece. It starts very ominously, with a sense of foreboding – dreading the events to come. The repeated C#s (as in measure 7) represent the simple call of the phoenix. The listener will hear the spirited theme of the phoenix, a death march, and a sense of nervousness as the creature builds its nest frantically, then sets itself on fire. The Dies Irae will signify the creature’s death, but the listener will feel it come back to life as the main them is brought back and the phoenix emerges once again. The 2005-2006 season saw me performing 80 marimba concerts. After the last one, I knew I was mentally burned out and physically spent. I sold my marimba and moved to Charleston, SC. I did not play marimba for almost 4 years. When I returned to the concert stage, I wanted to write a piece that expressed what I went through. This piece represents my life as a concert artist before and after. -Andy Harnsberger
