Written to serve as an homage to the minimalist composer Steve Reich, Clapping Music for One takes the ideas presented in his landmark piece “Clapping Music” and casts them into the genre of marching percussion. As the solo player works through the 13 measures of music, the stickings presented will move each hand through two different lines of music; the right hand keeps the original rhythmic groupings of 3-2-1-2 constant while the left hand shifts that grouping by one eighth-note in each measure. Further inspiration for this exercise came from other artists I have seen perform this as a solo piece, most notably the percussion virtuoso Dame Evelyn Glennie and drumset artist Glenn Kotche.
