South Carolina is known as the “Palmetto State,” with the abundance of palmetto trees, especially towards the beach areas. I had the opportunity to live in Charleston, SC for approximately 4 years, and it is still one of my favorite places on earth. The title, “Palmetto Moon” doesn’t refer to the crescent on the state flag, as many have suggested, but instead it refers to a feeling that you get when you are with your favorite person and overwhelmed with emotion. The piece is a tone painting and is fairly Impressionistic in nature. I am trying to enlist the imagination of the listener – to create an atmosphere where the listener could envision themselves on the beach. The stars are out, and the moon is shining bright. The waves are lapping up onto the shore. You are with your favorite person in the world, and there is no place you’d rather be. -Andy Harnsberger
